About this Bhagavad Gita retreat

The Bhagavad Gita - the song of the Divine - is one of the key foundational texts of the yoga tradition. Its profound teachings have provided a wealth of inspiration to countless seekers over the years. The teachings unfold through a conversation between Krishna, representing the teacher, and Arjuna, the seeker.

It was composed around 2 ½ thousand years ago, describing an epic battlefield much older than that. Yet its essential teachings are timeless and are just as relevant now in our daily lives as ever.

This retreat will illuminate the three key paths of yoga - gyana, bhakti and karma - through the unique inspirational lens of the Gita. These three paths are briefly:

  • Gyana yoga - the path of intuitive enquiry beyond the known parameters of who we are - we will be exploring these teachings in chapters 2 and 13 primarily.
  • Bhakti yoga - the path of love, connection and surrender - we will explore how the Gita describes these teachings in chapters 7, 9 and 12 primarily.
  • Karma yoga - the path of acting in awareness, in chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5.

We will also explore:

  • The mythical context of the Gita.
  • Chapter 1: Challenge as opportunity.
  • Chapter 18: how the Gita comes to an inspirational conclusion.
  • How to chant selected verses from the Gita, which is a mantrashastra - each of the 700 verses being a mantra.
  • Depending on the group, we may also explore the practice of writing selected Gita verses. This is a form of the practice of likhit japa, writing a mantra.
